RESULTS: History and Culture Auction Allures Eager Bidders this February

Once again, the History and Culture Auction was a great success. It featured 625 impressive lots comprised of autographs and artifacts throughout three centuries in virtually all fields of collecting. From first-hand accounts and primary documents serving as a window to the lifestyle, historic moments, and culture of the past, to memorabilia of sporting legends and entertainment icons, the items in this auction certainly caught the attention of avid bidders this month. There was an exceptional amount of lots surpassing auction house estimates.

Charles Sumner autographed "Freedom always for all!” handwritten quotation on page. It is dated December 17th, 1863, and sent from the Senate Chamber.

LOT #11: JACQUELINE KENNEDY - FABULOUS CONTENT AUTOGRAPHED 4-PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER RE. FASHION & TRIPSJacqueline Kennedy autographed 4-page handwritten letter (ALS). A wonderful letter sent to "Mrs. Lloyd" filled with content relating to fashion, interviews, and trip planning. 

Jackie has penned this letter on two pages, both sides of a single 5.75 x 7.75" sheet, Hyannis Port letterhead.

The letter reads in part: "I will do some sort of story for you—but it will have to be a compromise—A 1 page thumbnail sketch is what I'd like. I do know Glamour & think highly of it. The thing is—we have done a whole rash of stories lately—4 this summer & another coming up—(an interview with Richard Rovere for McCalls.) The ones we've done are LIFE, LOOK, Ladie's Home Journal & Redbook. I am so tired of all the hard work & confusion that goes into a story—especially one with pictures…We are traveling so often this fall—the few days at home I have are too precious to spend posing for pictures..."

LOT 384: WHITEY BULGER - SUPERB ALCATRAZ CONTENT AUTOGRAPHED 7-PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER & AUTOGRAPHED ENVELOPE

James "Whitey" Bulger handwritten and autographed 7-page 8.5 x 11" letter. The letter was sent on May 30, 2018 from the Federal Correctional Complex in Cleman, Florida. The letter is penned on both sides of four separate sheets.Nearly the entire contents of the letter relate to Alcatraz and Bulger sharing insight on his time spent there along with other prisoners and events. Bulge closes this remarkable letter with outstanding content with "I look back with nostalgia wish it was open so I could spend what ever time I have left on Alcatraz."
